Christina Ricci and her comedian boyfriend Owen Benjamin have ended their engagement, sources tell PEOPLE.

“Owen had a birthday party this past Sunday, and everything seemed fine. Sometime after, they got into a fight and decided to reevaluate things. [Then] the engagement was off,” says a source close to the couple.

Another source close to the actress says the pair called off the engagement before last week. “They really are still close,” adds the source. “They talk almost every day. It was a very mature decision and they both felt good about it. They’re definitely still friends.”

Ricci, 29, met Benjamin in 2008 on the set of their film All’s Faire in Love and went public with their relationship in October. Their engagement was announced in March.

A rep for Ricci had no comment.

Word around the internet is that Christina has signed on to co-star in an upcoming biopic based on the life of famous photographer Man Ray. The actress has signed on for the porn-tinged comedy that Adam Sandler co-wrote and is producing with Jack Giarraputo. Longtime Sandler associates Allen Covert and Barry Bernardi also are producing the flick, which Tom Brady is directing.

The story centers on a small-town nerd who stumbles upon a family secret: His quiet and demure parents were famous porn stars in the 1970s. This motivates him to leave Northern Iowa for Hollywood, hoping to follow in their footsteps and fulfill his destiny as the biggest adult-film star in the world.

Ricci, the female lead, is the guy’s innocent girlfriend.

Despite Sandler and Giarraputo’s involvement, the movie is not a Happy Madison production but rather by porn title-friendly entity Miles Deep Prods. The movie will act as a negative pickup for Sony, which will release it through one of its labels.

Nick Swardson is co-producing.

Principal photography starts at the end of April.

The Endeavor repped Brady co-wrote “The Animal” and co-wrote and directed “The Hot Chick,” both produced by Sandler and Giarraputo.

For Ricci, the project marks a return to her more lighthearted beginnings. The actress, repped by ICM and Management 360, has spent the past few years appearing in such dramas as “Black Snake Moan” and “Monster” but began her career in such movies as “Mermaids” and “The Addams Family.”

Christina Ricci and her comedian boyfriend Owen Benjamin will tie the knot, the actress’s rep tells PEOPLE.

Ricci, 29, met Benjamin on the set of their film All’s Faire in Love last year and went public with their relationship in October. Most recently, they were spotted cozying up at the Nobu West Hollywood’s one-year anniversary party last week.

Ricci, who previously dated actor Adam Goldberg, told UK’s Tatler as far back as May 2007 that she was ready to “settle down” though was worried about the fuss of a wedding. ” I just want to be married, or just engaged,” she said. “Basically, I just want a ring. And the tax break.”
