Hollywood has had it with cancer.
Jennifer Aniston, America Ferrera, David Cook, Casey Affleck, Meryl Streep, Lance Armstrong, Scarlett Johansson and Forest Whitaker are just some of the celebrities who are taking a stand against cancer during a one-hour television special to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Stand Up to Cancer has attracted A-list names to participate in the broadcast.
The effort began when a handful of members of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which addresses various health issues but emphasizes cancer research and prevention, and the Noreen Fraser Foundation, which works to raise awareness about women’s cancers, each discussed raising funds via a television broadcast. Soon, more individuals joined each effort, and eventually the two groups came together with the idea for SU2C.
“A lot of us had similar ideas at the same time. And we had some connection with each other,” says SU2C producer Laura Ziskin, a breast cancer survivor who joined the effort early. “Every single person involved in this is touched by this disease in one way or another.”
Other celebrities confirmed to appear on the broadcast: Christina Applegate, Josh Brolin, Katie Couric, Dana Delany, Fran Drescher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Jon Favreau, Charles Gibson, Neil Patrick Harris, Salma Hayek, Masi Oka, Danica Patrick, Christina Ricci, Robin Roberts, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Goran Visnjic and Brian Williams.
More talent will be announced later. Ziskin describes the show format as “edu-tainment” and explains that her goal is to make the broadcast lively and instructive from start to finish. “There’s humor, there’s music, there’s film pieces, there’s lots and lots of celebrities,” she says of the fundraiser.
As for recruiting stars, “if people are available, they are coming,” Ziskin says. “They want to participate.”
And while the producer says nothing should be missed, she insists, “You don’t want to miss Homer and Marge Simpson.”
Many stars already have started rallying around the cause. At major league baseball’s All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium recently, Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker and singer Sheryl Crow introduced a PSA soliciting donations for SU2C by texting contributions. The PSA, which stars Jessica Biel, is being shown at stadiums nationwide throughout the baseball season. On the Internet, video segments with the cast from The Daily Show can be seen at standup2cancer.org. Other interactive features are available on the site, which will continue to operate after the TV broadcast.
After all, Ziskin says, “we hope that Sept. 5 is just the beginning.”

Developed by Etranges Libellules, the game will be released this fall for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, Wii home video game system, PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and Nintendo DS. Reprising their roles as the characters of Spyro and his mentor Ignitus, are two popular Hollywood leading men, Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black from the Harry Potter films). Joining the Spyro roster this year are Christina Ricci, Blair Underwood, Mark Hamill and Wayne Brady, rounding out an all-star voice cast.
In the final chapter of the trilogy, players find Sypro teaming up with an unlikely ally — Cynder, his former enemy, to face his most challenging mission to date. As the Dark Master’s (voiced by Mark Hamill) evil envelopes the world like a plague, Spyro must fulfill his destiny and unlock the true power of the purple dragon within him to stop the Dark Master in his tracks.
The game introduces two never before seen elements into the Spyro universe: Spyro can now fly at any time and players can drop-in/drop-out with the new cooperative feature. The co-op feature allows players to have the option of completing the game as either Spyro or Cynder, giving them more freedom to explore Spyro’s world in completely new ways.

Christina Ricci began generating buzz around her impressive acting talents with her film debut in Mermaids and the former child actress has since established quite a cult following with her distinguishing performances in films like The Adams Family, Casper, The Ice Storm and Sleepy Hollow. The once troubled teen, who has starred in several indie films and rather provocative and revealing roles, can next be seen in the Wachowski Brothers’ big screen adaptation of the popular 1960s cartoon Speed Racer.
The 28-year-old plays Trixie, the feisty girlfriend of Speed and ComingSoon.net talked to Ricci about her new family film and what is was like working with the media shy Wachowski brothers.
ComingSoon.net: Is the lighter hair for a role or just for you?
Christina Ricci: No, it’s for me.
CS: What attracted you to this?
Ricci: I loved the idea of working with the Wachowskis. I’ve wanted to work with them for a while and then “Speed Racer” was actually always something that people had mentioned to me like, “oh, you know they’re gonna make ‘Speed Racer.’ You’d be a good Trixie,” blah, blah, blah.
CS: Were you familiar with her?
Ricci: I was familiar with her from all the hipster paraphernalia and the Geico commercial but I’d never seen the cartoons. So then, they sent me the script and I had to go in and audition very quickly afterwards.
CS: What was the biggest challenge about playing her?
Ricci: There really weren’t any challenges. I didn’t enjoy my haircut but that’s really the only challenge.
CS: But it looked good on you.
Ricci: I know, but when you have long hair and then, all of a sudden, you get a really drastic haircut, you know, us ladies, we cry. But, other than that, she was a great character to play. She was amazing and fun and they dressed me up like a doll every day but then I got to do all this actiony stuff and had a really good time.
CS: You have said you pick characters who are afraid and a little ashamed of who they are and they go to extremes because of it and this character seems completely oppositeā¦
Ricci: I think I like complex characters and, for drama, the people who do the most dramatic things are the people who have personal problems. Recently I have grown up and become a little less afraid of sincerity and I have a real vested interest in women’s issues and the next generation of girls and also, just looking around a little bit more and seeing all of the negative images that are out there for young girls. It’s like, what are they supposed to grow up into if the only images they have out there are like the brats? It’s crazy. So, I really like the fact that she, to me, is the ultimate feminist character. She’s girlie as she wants to be but then she does everything the boys do and there’s no commentary on “ooo, it’s a girl doing that. Oooo, it’s a girl flying a helicopter.” And the brothers are very much responsible for that kind of thing because they have a very strong sense of equality and an interest in leaving the world a better place than they found it. So, I was really excited about that.
